Retired Atlantic Hurricane Names

Retired Atlantic Hurricane Names

Atlantic Hurricane Names are on a 6 year cycle, so the same hurricane names come around every seventh year. Not all hurricane names make it however. If a storm is so costly and deadly that it would not be appropriate or sensitive to use it again a few short years later, then the name is retired . . . struck off the name list and a fresh name is selected as a replacement.

The six year storm name list was compounded in 1979, so prior to 1979 some names were dropped from the list for a variety of other reasons . . . many of which remain completely unknown.
